Our Mission

Our mission is to provide premium quality hardwoods, mouldings and millwork services with a passion that makes you want to work with us again. And again. Our team approach to exceed the expectations of the finest buyers and craftsmen in the business began over three generation ago and continues today.

Heritage of Excellence and Enduring Relationships

Our industry heritage dates back seven generations to the late 1700’s. When grandfather T. Baird McIlvain Sr. left his brothers to start his own hardwood and softwood distribution company in 1955, his recipe for success was simple: partner with the best, deliver consistent, high quality lumber and focus on developing lasting relationships. That straight forward vision was shared by son Tom McIlvain and passed on to his sons Baird and Russ. Today, the pursuit of excellence and our relationships with suppliers, customers, employees and our community remain at the heart of TBM Hardwoods.

Partnerships with the industry’s most reputable sawmills enable us to procure the highest quality hardwood lumber. Client relationships drive our growth and investment in technologies to serve their needs today — and tomorrow. Vertical integration enables us to control quality through the operational process from kiln-drying, sorting, milling, to final delivery to your destination on our fleet of trucks. Teamwork and an employee-centered approach means we aim to build a culture where everyone is passionate about the customer and producing quality products and results.

History of TBM Hardwoods

TBM History

TBM Hardwoods has been a family-owned and operated hardwood distributor since 1955. Although ownership and processes have changed over the years, our commitment to premium quality and customer care has not.

T. Baird McIlvain Sr. founded the original company with a single truck and a rented lumber shed in Philadelphia. The establishment of his new company was a fateful moment in which five generations of experience had come full circle. In 1798, T. Baird’s great-great-grandfather had opened a lumber company–also in Philadelphia. With single-minded determination and a focus on matching customer needs with quality lumber, T. Baird set out on his own and rapidly developed a wholesale hardwood distribution business to meet the increasing demands of an expanding, post-war economy.

In 1960, T. Baird bought five acres of flat, ideally-situated land in King of Prussia, PA near the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With access to railroad and highway, he built a 2.25 million board foot capacity shed and planing mill. Connected with some of the best sawmills in the country, T. Baird developed an assorted inventory of premium kiln-dried hardwoods for the quality-minded customer.

T. Baird’s son Tom joined the operation in 1965. With summers working in the yard, a business degree and guidance from his father, Tom expanded sales developing accounts along the eastern seaboard from Virginia to New Hampshire.

The company’s reputation for dedicated customer service and quality spread as we served the needs of high profile accounts and nationally recognized brands.

The company expanded in the 1980’s specializing in imported hardwoods, specifically Genuine Mahogany and Spanish Cedar from South and Central America and Africa. Headquarters moved from King of Prussia to Hanover, PA where we consolidated and centralized kiln-drying, operations and inventory. In the 1990’s, Tom’s children Kim, Baird and Russell joined the company and expansion began into custom mouldings, ripsawing, precision end trimming, priming/buffing/finishing operations.

Today, still family owned and operated with an experienced, dedicated team offering a full range of hardwood products and milling services, TBM Hardwoods is positioned to serve the growing needs of a variety of successful national and international manufacturers.
