Your Premium Hardwoods Distributor

TBM’s Mission:

Our mission is to provide quality hardwoods and mouldings with a passion for service that makes you want to work with TBM Hardwoods again. And again.  That focus on exceeding the high expectations of the finest buyers and craftsmen began over three generation ago.

A Hardwood Lumber Company with a Vision

We have an industry heritage dating back to the late 1700’s, and have been exceeding the high expectations of the finest buyers and craftsmen for three generations. In 1955, fifth generation lumberman T. Baird McIlvain Sr. started his own hardwood and softwood lumber distribution company. His vision was to partner with the best, deliver consistent, high quality lumber and focus on developing lasting relationships. That vision is at the heart of TBM to this day. Our partnerships with the most reputable sawmills allow us to procure the highest quality hardwood lumber. Our vertical integration allows us to control the entire process.  From kiln-drying, sorting, milling, to final delivery on our fleet of trucks, TBM is in control.

Value-add Millwork Services that Help Our Customers
In addition to the variety of rough cut hardwood lumber offerings, we offer value-added millwork services that help increase yields, reduce labor cost, and minimize waste for our customers:

  • Planing
  • Ripping
  • Resawing
  • Sanding
  • Moulding
  • Priming/buffing/finishing.

Our ability to select, mill and deliver what you need when you need it is what we do best. Give us a call and speak directly with Baird or Russ for suggestions and solutions. Our aim is to exceed expectations for quality, price and delivery.

History of TBM Hardwoods

TBM History

TBM Hardwoods has been a family-owned and operated hardwood distributor since 1955. While faces, ownership and processes have changed over the years, our commitment to premium quality and customer care have not.

T. Baird McIlvain Sr. founded the original company with a single truck and a rented lumber shed in Philadelphia. The establishment of his new company was a fateful moment in which five generations of experience had come full circle. In 1798, T. Baird’s great-great-grandfather had opened a lumber company–also in Philadelphia. With single-minded determination and a focus on matching customer needs with quality lumber, T. Baird set out on his own and rapidly developed a wholesale hardwood distribution business to meet the increasing demands of an expanding, post-war economy.

In 1960, T. Baird bought five acres of flat, ideally-situated land in King of Prussia, PA near the Pennsylvania Turnpike. With access to railroad and highway, he built a 2.25 million board foot capacity shed and planing mill. Connected with some of the best sawmills in the country, T. Baird developed an assorted inventory of premium kiln-dried hardwoods for the quality-minded customer.

T. Baird’s son Tom joined the operation in 1965. With summers working in the yard, a business degree and guidance from his father, Tom expanded sales developing accounts along the eastern seaboard from Virginia to New Hampshire.

The company’s reputation for dedicated customer service and quality spread as we served the needs of high profile accounts and nationally recognized brands.

The company expanded in the 1980’s specializing in imported hardwoods. We began to directly import exotics, specifically Genuine Mahogany and Spanish Cedar from South and Central America and Africa. Headquarters moved from King of Prussia to Hanover, PA and we consolidated and centralized kiln-drying, operations and inventory. In the 1990’s, Tom’s children Kim, Baird and Russell joined the company. TBM invested in custom mouldings, ripsawing and priming operations to become a full-service millwork and hardwood supplier.

Today, with over 7 million board feet in our Hanover yard, a fleet of delivery vehicles, and an experienced and dedicated workforce, TBM Hardwoods is positioned to serve the growing needs of a variety of successful national and international manufacturers.
